well, looky there!

Finally!  An intelligent, well-reasoned, socially conscious letter leading off the Letters to the Editor section of the AZ Republic!  Let's check this beauty out:

Lots of people out there want to have their cake and eat it, too.

People want the government (through the Phoenix Police Department) to be responsible for guarding luggage at Sky Harbor International Airport, but aren't willing to pay for extra officers through their taxes.
People want to complain about "these kids today," but rail against every social program that would provide monetary support (through taxes) to organizations that support the uneducated, the disadvantaged, the sick and the poor.
Things cost money. If you want more services, better services, then you have to pay for them.
In America, you pay for those things through taxes. But you don't get to pick and choose what government services your taxes pay for. That's part of living in a society.
And you can't have more for less. Sorry. It just doesn't work that way.
Now, I can only assume that the letter-writer was responding to two things:

  1. A recent letter published which decried the Phoenix PD for allowing two people to steal hundreds of pieces of luggage from the airport.  The guy was from Sun City, which is full of old people.
  2. Constant comments by other old people about what the damn kids are doing and what this world is coming to...the same old people who revel in Fox News' hate of all things liberal (including, of course, the government, taxes [for any reason whatsoever], and helping poor people).
Wait...I know the letter-writer was responding to those things.  You know how I know?  Because the writer's initials are ME.

By the way, if you haven't seen The Daily Show's take on the latest Foxy nonsense, you're doing yourself an injustice.  Check it out here.

  1. Are you sure the initials were ME? I think they should have been ND. Good for you!
